Caregiver Tips
Senior care is a huge topic. I tried to cover quite a few bases for caregivers in this article, including topics like in-home assistance and assisted-living facilities, Alzheimer's and age-related dementia, socialization and safety, and goals-of-care conversations.
Distilling tons of information into one article is a challenge, but it’s a good problem to have, I guess. For this piece I interviewed representatives from Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at UK and Bluegrass Care Navigators, and included research from Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living, as well as the National Family Caregiver Support Program.
There is so much information and assistance available for caregivers. This isn’t something anyone needs to do alone. I was ill-prepared in 2011 when I found myself having to deal with situations and decisions that became all-consuming for the next few years. There are legal and financial things — professionals are truly the way to go, after taking in recommendations from people you trust — and emotional support from close family and friends was absolutely, positively, incandescently the most important thing. Could NOT have gotten through many a day without my people.
